What to expect

The reduction mammoplasty procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves several key steps:

Anaesthesia

On the day of the surgery, you’ll be administered general anesthesia to ensure that you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure. Local anaesthetic will be used to make sure you are pain-free when you wake up.

Incision placement

The incision pattern for breast reduction is anchor-shaped and includes a scar around the areola, a vertical scar down to the breast crease and a horizontal scart and along the crease.

Tissue removal

Through the incisions, excess tissue, fat and skin is removed. The breasts are then reshaped and repositioned. All tissue that is removed is sent to the laboratory for analysis.

Closing incisions

Once the breast has been reduced to the desired size the incisions will be closed using absorbable sutures and shower-proof dressings.

Areola repositioning and resizing

A central part of a breast reduction is the elevation of nipple position and a reduction in the diameter of the nipple itself so that it remains in proportion with the breast.

Healing support

If needed, drains may be used as part of your operation. This is very much a minority of patients who require this but, when they are used, they will be removed the following day before you go home.

Dressing and bandages

Once the incisions are closed, the surgical area is covered with dressings or bandages to protect the incisions and support the healing process. All our dressings are shower-proof meaning you can shower, as normal, from the next day after surgery.

Recovery

After surgery, we will be by your side as you wake up from anesthesia, making sure you are comfortable and cared for. Before you go home, our team will talk you through your personalised aftercare plan, including how to look after your wounds, manage discomfort and ease back into daily activities safely.
